Interconnections Between Nature, Animals and Human-beings in the Eyes of Haam Juhae

As an illustrator who's passionate about drawing scenery with humans and animals, Haam Juhae sees much more than their mere existence but also an emotional, spiritual connection between the three parties. With Haam telling us his perspectives as an illustrator we can explore how peaceful and amazing the world can be through his unique drawings.

AWW: Where do you like to draw?

Haam Juhae: I draw only at home. I will just jog or wandering around outside of my house.

AWW: Do you still remember your first piece of work? What made you start drawing?

Haam: I don't remember my first piece of work. But I remember vividly both the thrill and anxiety when I paint. These two feelings blend and merge even now when I draw. There is always an ambivalent feeling in my paintings.

AWW: How do you come up with the style of illustrating animals?

Haam: Sad feelings usually take precedence when I draw animals. I can sense their emotions as human-beings are also animals too. Rather than outlining just the image of an animal, I draw a scene in which I ask myself how this animal feels.

AWW: Could you kindly explain your message behind your work?

Haam: I paint a lot of scenery illustrations. The first reason is that I can imply my feelings and emotions in the scenery. The second reason is that scenery can articulate a story between nature and people. After all, scenery paintings relate to people themselves. However, I am not intrigued by human portraits drawn without scenery.

AWW: What’s your beloved project/product/book/tv show/movie with an animal theme?

Haam: I prefer to look at animals appearing in movies, cartoons and dramas rather than production just about animals. I will always compare the animals' behaviour in the film with my dog.
